Coral reefs are arguably the most productive and diverse ecosystem on the planet, home to hundreds of thousands of species providing crucial services to millions of people. However, coral reefs are under increasing threat from human pressures such as overfishing, pollution and coastal development, as well as more intense and frequent environmental disturbances. Although coral reefs, globally, face increasing threats, those in the Caribbean have been hardest hit in recent years by major bleaching events and disease outbreaks resulting in dramatic shifts in species dominance.
